How to get cited by ChatGPT: what works, what is unproven, and how to test it

A practical guide to getting your pages cited in ChatGPT answers: the crawlers to allow, how to structure a page, and an honest look at which advice has evidence and which is vendor marketing.

Search “how to get cited by ChatGPT” and most results are written by companies selling a tool for it. They share useful ideas, but many statistics are repeated from one blog to the next with no original source, and none show a real before and after. This guide separates what OpenAI documents, what is plausible, and what is unproven, and ends with a way to test your own pages instead of trusting anyone's numbers, ours included.

How do I fix a long meta description?

Shorten it so the main point comes first. Google cuts descriptions by pixel width, so aim for around 120 to 150 characters and measure the result.

Let the right crawler in

OpenAI documents three separate bots, and mixing them up is the most common mistake. Check which is which before editing robots.txt.

BotWhat it doesBlock it?
OAI-SearchBotFinds pages to show in ChatGPT search answers. Not used for training. No, if you want to be cited.
GPTBotCollects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models.Your choice. Blocking it does not remove you from search.
ChatGPT-UserFetches a page when a person asks ChatGPT about it.Usually leave it.

OpenAI says that blocking OAI-SearchBot means a site will not appear in ChatGPT search answers, and that changes to robots.txt can take about a day to apply. If you do not mention these bots at all, they are allowed by default. Our own robots.txt has no rule for them, so they are allowed on auditmatic.app. To allow search and refuse training:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

Also check that a firewall or bot-protection setting is not blocking these bots before they reach your robots.txt. A rule that blocks “unknown bots” is a common cause.

Make sure you are indexed

Many guides say ChatGPT search relies on Bing's index. That is widely repeated, but OpenAI's own crawler page does not state it, so treat it as likely rather than confirmed. It costs little to act on: verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and use IndexNow to tell Bing when pages are new or changed. We are doing exactly this for auditmatic.app. Google's index matters too, so submit your sitemap in Google Search Console as well.

Answer the question in the first lines

A page that is easy to quote gets quoted more often. Put the direct answer in the first paragraph, then explain. Use headings that match the question people ask, such as “How do I allow OAI-SearchBot?”, and keep each section on one idea so a single paragraph can stand alone. This is the same structure the best featured snippets use, and it works for people as well as models.

  • State the fact, not a hint at it. “OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search” is quotable. “It depends on many factors” is not.
  • Use specifics. Numbers, names, dates and steps give a model something concrete to cite.
  • Show who wrote it and when. A named source and an updated date make a page easier to trust.
  • Link to primary sources. Pages that cite their own sources read as more reliable than pages that only claim things.

An example of answer-first writing

Take a page about robots.txt. A version that is hard to quote opens with history and context, and the useful part arrives in the fourth paragraph. A version that is easy to quote opens with the answer and then supports it:

Hard to quoteEasy to quote
Robots.txt has been part of the web since the 1990s and many site owners wonder how it relates to modern AI tools…To let ChatGPT search cite your site, allow the OAI-SearchBot user agent in robots.txt. Here is how, and how to check it worked.

What has evidence and what does not

AdviceStatus
Allow OAI-SearchBotDocumented by OpenAI.
Be indexed by BingLikely, widely repeated, not stated by OpenAI.
Add statistics, quotes and sourcesAn academic paper on generative engine optimisation (Princeton and others, 2024) reported gains of up to about 40% in its own tests. Vendors repeat this widely. We have not reproduced it.
Get mentioned on other sitesPlausible, since answers draw on many sources, but unproven.
Add schema markup or an llms.txt fileDisputed. We publish an llms.txt because it takes minutes, but we found no source showing it changes citations.

Test it with real prompts

You can check your own visibility without a paid tool. Write ten questions your customers might ask. Ask each one in ChatGPT three times, on different days, and note whether your site is cited. Answers vary from run to run, so one result tells you little; a pattern across thirty runs tells you something. Repeat after you change a page, and keep the before and after.

If you would rather not do this by hand, the AI tracking feature runs the same kind of prompts on a schedule and shows which sites are cited, and the get mentioned by AI search strategy walks through the full workflow.

What you cannot control

No one can promise a citation. Models decide per question, results differ between runs, and a page that is cited today may not be next week. Anyone offering a guaranteed result is selling confidence, not evidence. What you can do is remove the blockers above and publish pages that are worth citing.

A quick checklist

  • OAI-SearchBot is allowed in robots.txt and not blocked by a firewall.
  • The site is verified in Bing Webmaster Tools, with the sitemap submitted.
  • Each important page opens with the answer.
  • Claims link to primary sources and the page shows its date.
  • You test real prompts, repeatedly, and keep the results.

Most of this is plain technical SEO, so start with the technical SEO audit checklist, and if you use an agent, see how to run an audit with Claude Code. The wider topic is on the AI visibility library page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my website cited by ChatGPT?

Allow OAI-SearchBot, get indexed, put clear answers at the top of useful pages, and support claims with sources. Then test with real prompts, since there is no guaranteed method.

Should I block GPTBot?

It is your choice. GPTBot is for training, and blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?

Many sources say Bing. OpenAI's crawler documentation does not say, so verify in both Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console.

How long does it take to be cited?

There is no reliable number. Vendor claims of 30 to 60 days are not backed by a study we could find, so measure your own pages over time.
