Keyword gap analysis: what rivals rank for and you do not

By the Auditmatic team · Updated 3 November 2026 · 6 min read

Pull both lists

Export the keywords each site ranks for: yours and one competitor's. Use a competitor of similar size, so the gap is realistic.

Remove the noise

  1. Delete the brand terms of both sites. Nobody searches for a competitor's name hoping to find you.
  2. Delete keywords with no relevance to what you sell.
  3. Keep keywords where the competitor ranks in the top 20 and you do not appear.

Rank what is left

Sort by search volume and difficulty, and mark the intent of each. A good first list has 20 to 30 keywords you could write a page for in the next month.

Turn it into pages

Group related keywords into clusters, as in the clustering strategy, and give each cluster one page. Note for each page what the competitor's version does well and how yours will be better.

Example output
  • Cluster: invoice reminder emails, 8 keywords, competitor ranks in the top 5, we have no page
  • Cluster: late payment fee wording, 5 keywords, competitor in the top 15, we have a thin post to improve

Questions

Which competitor should I use?

One close to your size that targets similar customers. Compare against a giant for ideas only.

Why remove brand terms?

Brand searches belong to the brand. They hide the keywords you can realistically win.
