How accurate are competitor traffic estimates?

Where the numbers come from

Tools estimate traffic by taking the keywords a site ranks for, the estimated search volume of each, and an assumed click-through rate for each position. Those inputs are all approximations, so the output is too.

What can mislead you

  • Stacked variants: many near-identical keywords can count the same visitors more than once.
  • Brand traffic: a well-known brand's number is mostly people searching its name.
  • Unrelated business lines: a company with a blog on another topic can show traffic that has nothing to do with your market.
  • Rank volatility: one keyword moving a few places can swing the estimate.

How to use the numbers well

  1. Compare competitors against each other, not against your own analytics.
  2. Look at the trend over months, not one day.
  3. Open the top pages and top keywords to see what the traffic is made of.
  4. Remove brand terms and check what remains.

Calibrate against your own data

Compare the tool's estimate for your own site with your real Search Console clicks. If it is consistently half or double, apply that adjustment mentally to the competitors.

Run it with your AI agent

Connect your agent to Auditmatic, then paste this prompt. Replace the parts in angle brackets. It reads real data and asks before it spends anything.

Use my Auditmatic project for <your-domain>. Run get_domain_overview for my site and <competitor.com>. For the competitor, run get_ranked_keywords and tell me how much of its estimated traffic comes from brand terms and from the top five keywords. Compare my estimate with my real clicks from get_search_console_performance, and tell me how far off the estimate is.

Without a tool

You can do this by hand with free tools:

  • Check the competitor's domain overview in a free tool.
  • Look at its top pages and see what share a few keywords make up.
  • Compare your own estimate with Search Console.

Questions

Why does another tool show a different number?

Each tool uses its own keyword data and click assumptions, so estimates differ. Compare within one tool.

Can I trust competitor traffic for decisions?

Trust direction and relative size. Do not trust precise figures.
