Find keyword opportunities in your Search Console data

Open the right report
In Search Console, open Performance, then Search results. Turn on average position, and set the date range to the last three months. The Queries tab lists what people searched for before they saw your site.
Three patterns to look for
- Near misses: queries with good impressions and an average position of 5 to 20. A better page can move these to the first page.
- Low clicks, high impressions: you rank but the title or description does not earn the click. Rewrite them.
- Unplanned queries: searches you never wrote for. If several share a theme, they deserve their own page.
What the data cannot tell you
Search Console only shows queries where you appeared, so it cannot show what you are missing. Positions are averages across all the impressions, not a fixed rank. Use it for opportunities you already have, and a keyword tool for new ones.
Turn the list into work
- Export the queries with impressions, clicks and position.
- Match each near-miss query to the page that receives it.
- Improve that page: answer the query in the first paragraph, add a clear heading for it, and link to it from related pages.
- Check again in four to six weeks.
Run it with your AI agent
Connect your agent to Auditmatic, then paste this prompt. Replace the parts in angle brackets. It reads real data and asks before it spends anything.
Use my Auditmatic project for <your-domain>. Run get_search_console_performance for the last 90 days. List queries with at least 50 impressions and an average position between 5 and 20, grouped by the page that receives them. For each page, say what to change to rank better. Then use get_search_opportunities and add any keywords you find that I do not already rank for.
Without a tool
You can do this by hand with free tools:
- Open Search Console, Performance, and export the Queries table.
- Sort by impressions and filter average position between 5 and 20.
- Pair each query with its page using the Pages tab.
Questions
Why is the position a decimal in Search Console?
It is an average across every time your result was shown, so it can be a decimal such as 7.4.
Does Search Console show every query?
No. Some rare queries are hidden for privacy, and it only lists queries where your site appeared.
