How to get backlinks: start with what already earns them

Pages that earn links
- Free tools and calculators.
- Original data, even a small survey.
- Templates and checklists.
- The clearest explanation of a confusing topic.
Find what already works
Look at the best-linked pages of competitors and similar sites. Note the format and the topic. The ones with many referring domains show what your niche links to.
Build a better version
Make it more complete, more current or easier to use than what exists. A small improvement a visitor can notice is enough.
Tell the right people
- List sites that link to the older versions of this kind of page.
- Write a short note: what you built, why it is better, and a link.
- Offer something useful, not a favour request. Keep it honest and personal.
- Follow up once, then move on.
What to avoid
Do not buy links or join link schemes. They put your site at risk and rarely help.
Run it with your AI agent
Connect your agent to Auditmatic, then paste this prompt. Replace the parts in angle brackets. It reads real data and asks before it spends anything.
Use my Auditmatic project for <your-domain>. Run get_backlinks_profile for <competitor-1.com> and <competitor-2.com> and list their 10 best-linked pages with the format of each. Suggest three resources I could build that would be better, and for each, list 10 relevant domains that link to the older version, with a one-line reason.
Without a tool
You can do this by hand with free tools:
- Search your topic and note the pages that appear to be linked to often.
- Check who links to them with a free backlink checker.
- Build a better page and email five of those sites.
Questions
Is buying backlinks worth it?
No. It breaks search guidelines and risks a penalty. Earn links with useful content instead.
How long does it take?
Months, not days. Links come after the page is good and people know about it.
