Index bloat: when removing pages helps and when it does not

What index bloat is
Search engines can index a huge number of near-empty pages that a site generates by accident: filtered lists, tag archives, search results, duplicate parameters. If these outnumber your useful pages, they waste crawling attention and can dilute the site.
How to check for it
- In Search Console, open the Pages report and compare the number of indexed pages with the number you expect.
- Look at the reasons pages are not indexed, such as crawled but not indexed.
- Run a site audit and group pages by URL pattern to see which patterns create the most pages.
Does it matter for a small site?
Rarely. If you have a few hundred pages, deleting some will not change much. Spend the time making your best pages better instead.
Choose the lightest fix
- Improve: if the page could be useful, make it so.
- Merge: combine thin pages on one topic into one stronger page, with redirects.
- Noindex: keep the page for visitors but ask search engines not to index it.
- Remove: delete the page and let it return a not-found error, if it has no value or links.
Run it with your AI agent
Connect your agent to Auditmatic, then paste this prompt. Replace the parts in angle brackets. It reads real data and asks before it spends anything.
Use my Auditmatic project for <your-domain>. Run run_site_audit and read get_audit_pages. Group the URLs by pattern and tell me which patterns create the most thin or duplicate pages. For each pattern, recommend improve, merge, noindex or remove, and why. Do not change anything: list the changes for my approval.
Without a tool
You can do this by hand with free tools:
- Compare indexed pages in Search Console with the pages you expect.
- List the URL patterns that create the extra pages.
- Decide a fix per pattern and apply it to a small group first.
Questions
Is it bad to have many pages?
No. It is bad to have many weak pages you did not mean to publish. Many strong pages are good.
Noindex or delete?
Noindex when visitors still use the page. Delete when it has no value and no links.
