How to match your positioning to what people actually search

The positioning gap

Teams often name their category in words nobody searches. If buyers look for "invoice software" and you describe yourself as a "billing intelligence platform", the right visitors never arrive.

A quick demand test

  1. Write your category in one sentence, and list three other ways people could describe it.
  2. Check the monthly searches for each phrase in a keyword tool.
  3. Search each and see who ranks. If the results are your direct alternatives, that is the category buyers use.
Example
  • "billing intelligence platform": almost no searches
  • "invoice software": large volume, direct competitors rank
  • Decision: describe the product as invoice software, and explain the extra on the page

Adjust your wording

Use the searched phrase in your page titles, headings and first paragraphs. You can keep your brand language lower on the page.

When there is no demand

A new category has no search volume yet. In that case, target the problem people already search, then introduce your category as the answer.

Run it with your AI agent

Connect your agent to Auditmatic, then paste this prompt. Replace the parts in angle brackets. It reads real data and asks before it spends anything.

Use my Auditmatic project for <your-domain>. Read the project context. Take these ways to describe my product: <list 4 phrases>. Run get_keyword_metrics on each, then get_serp_results on the top two. Tell me which phrase buyers actually search, who ranks for it, and how I should change my homepage title and first heading.

Questions

Should I drop my brand's own words?

No. Keep them, but lead with the words buyers search, so the right people find you first.

What about a brand-new category?

Target the problem people already search for, and introduce the category as the solution.
