Local rank tracking: position depends on where you stand
By the Auditmatic team · Updated 3 November 2026 · 5 min read
Why local results move
For searches like "plumber" or "coffee shop", Google shows the businesses nearest the searcher. Move a few blocks and the order changes. A business can be first beside its door and invisible two miles away.
What a rank grid shows
A grid checks the same search from many points around your business and shows the position at each one. It turns a vague "we rank fine" into a map with strong and weak areas.
How to use one
- Choose the local keywords that match how customers search, such as the service plus the area.
- Run a grid centred on your business and see where you rank in the first page of the map.
- Note the areas where you are weak and where customers come from.
- Improve your profile, reviews and local pages for those areas, then run the grid again.
What else moves local rankings
Distance, relevance and prominence all play a part: a complete and accurate business profile, good reviews, and a site that clearly covers the services and areas you serve.
Run it with your AI agent
Connect your agent to Auditmatic, then paste this prompt. Replace the parts in angle brackets. It reads real data and asks before it spends anything.
Use my Auditmatic project for <your-domain>. Run get_business_profile and check it is complete. Then run get_local_rank_grid for <service keyword> around <business address>, and describe where I rank strongly and weakly. Suggest three changes to my profile and pages to improve the weak areas. Tell me the cost before you run the grid.
Without a tool
You can do this by hand with free tools:
- Search your service from your business address and from two or three nearby places, in a private window.
- Compare who appears in each.
- Check your Google Business Profile for missing details.
Questions
Is a local rank tracker different from a normal one?
Yes. A normal tracker checks one place. A local grid checks many, which is what matters for businesses that serve an area.
How often should I check a grid?
Monthly is enough to see the effect of changes. Check more often only while running a specific push.
